Village of Lubo
Tanudan, Kalinga
Philippines
Nestled high up in the Cordillera mountain range of Northern Luzon, the i-Lubos (people of Lubo) belongs to the Kalinga tribe who were former tattoed headhunters and proficient rice terrace builders. 40 kilometers from the nearest town, the unelectrified village is reacheable only via a muddy road and mountain trail.
Their remoteness protected their people, culture, and way of life from Spanish, American, and Japanese invaders but likewise left them behind in the march to modernization and alternative livelihood.
I feel that ecotourism is the best answer to balance between preserving a rich culture and providing income to the people. It will also discourage the younger generation from emigrating out of the village and losing the proud Kalinga identity.
Do visit them, but please tread lightly.
