Liberalism - "The main focus of modern liberalism in the United States is voting rights for all adult citizens, equal rights, separation of church and state, protection of the environment, and the provision by the government of social services, such as education, health care, and highways, and also food for the hungry and housing for the homeless."
While the focus of liberalism sounds good, has it been good for our country?
Voting rights were tainted with the ACORN scandal and with the black panthers showing up at polling places.
Equal rights - to achieve redistribution of the wealth, can we truly claim that we are striving for equal rights? It seems that while one group benefits another group is punished.
Separation of church and state - I agree with this one, but what I don't agree with is the government taking the side of one non-believer to force a group of believers to adopt the practices of the non-believer. Again, by taking up the cause of one side, they actually punish the other side.
Protection of the environment - In my state there is an opportunity for more permanent jobs in a very poor part of our state and increased energy production with the mining of coal. There is clean coal technology that can convert this coal to gas with little impact to the enviroment but the word coal strikes fear in the hearts of all and so an opportunity will be lost. (the geologist on the project provided this info)
Provision of social services
Education - I think we can all agreed that the public school system is not adequately meeting the needs of our people...we are sinking in the world ratings and are still spending more than most countries.
Health care - Well, this system is a mess and the "fix" really didn't fix anything and it appears may have made things worse.
Highways - Our roads aren't too bad here but...
Food for the hungry - we spend so much money but yet kids still go to bed hungry here in the US
Housing for the homeless - Are we really proud of our public housing developments here in the US?
