SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- Heavy downpours battered Seoul on Tuesday, flooding roads, houses and buildings and causing power outages to about 100 homes, officials said.

Up to about 100 millimeters of rain fell per hour in Seoul, causing flash floods that led to traffic restriction on at least 11 submerged sections of major roads in the city, according to police.

The western part of the city was hit the hardest, having received up to 222 mm of rain as of 3:15 p.m. Lightning also struck the region, causing power outages to about 100 homes, police said.

Television footage showed half-submerged vehicles on flooded roads, torrents of rainwater running down the staircase leading to a pedestrian underpass, and ankle-deep water covering the ticket window area of a subway station.

Seoul's anti-disaster office said it has received a series of requests for help with water drainage systems after homes and buildings were flooded.
