Synopsis– A major earthquake 7.0 earthquake struck the South Island of New Zealand at 04:35 am local time on Saturday morning. This was just west of Christchurch.
A Tsunami Watch or Warning was not issued for the event.

Analysis – Earthquake of this size can produce light to moderate structural damage. Reports from Christchurch is that it was felt as “strong to very strong” in some places and emergency officials are reporting “a lot of but there are no reports of major damage or injuries.
Expect strong aftershocks to strike the area up to 48 hours after the event.
