The following may be creative ways to increase productivity and save money for our schools. Perhaps this may help reduce class size as well.
First, why not redefine workers job classification? Many teachers sometimes need a second job to fill time and increase low pay. We have teachers with certain academic skills, who can contribute to employers business operations. At the same time, can some employees teach a couple of hours per week in the daytime for our schools? We have engineers, journalists, construction workers, actuaries, car mechanics and others with skills that can be offered to students. The employers and the schools could share benefits, such as health insurance and retirement pay. This may save both schools and businesses millions if done right.
Brain research studies have shown it is most productive between boredom and too much stress. Many teachers and employees may not be at their peek performance due to boredom on the job. If both teachers and employees days are broken, the hypothesis is that they will be more productive once they get back to their original jobs.
Second, why not redefine where classes are held? Many churches sit empty on weekdays. Many retail stores and malls sit empty all the time. Many business conference rooms are not used at times during the day. These places may be good locations for classroom settings. This will break up the day for students, as well.
Third, we should utilize buses for multi-purposes. You see many city buses and school buses sitting empty and idle in the daytime. Why not utilize these buses in the daytime for multipurpose reasons? We have many baby boomers. By the end of this decade, many will not be able to drive due to age. We need to greatly expand the number and use of shuttle buses. So the elderly will have a way to get to needed services such as doctors’ appointments, pharmacies and to the grocery stores. Perhaps the Department of elderly affairs and our schools could share in transportation costs to save money. Employers could also go in with this partnership to save money on transportation costs as well. With these changes, buses would be kept busy transporting employees, the elderly and students separately throughout the day. Money could be saved by all these organizations in transportation costs if done right.
Finally, in order to increase productivity and save money; we need to think outside of the box with such changes. Then we may all win in more ways than one.
