Glen Beck is having a rally. He is having at the Lincoln memorial. He wants to get his message out to the American public. He is encouraging people to re-look at their rights as citizens and honor our military. He is not saying to any specific person of color, or religion, or gender, or sexual orientation not to come, he wants everyone to be there. Beck is a polarizing individual and you either like his interpretations of our country or you dislike him. There are very few in the middle with him. Like it or not he is right on many topics and that is why he has been successful all these years. Did Beck pick the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech and its location to make a point? Maybe, but actually we can only speculate that because we really do not know. If you want to have a rally, this time of year is the best time to do it in DC because schools are still not in session and the weather is generally good. You can get the most impact to what you are saying having an environment that allows the biggest user friendly audience. You have to believe King knew this too and that is why he picked this time of year.
When talking about King and the civil rights movement I believe there is a bit of a misconception. King did not march and say - I have a dream for only black people. We all can be pretty sure that that was part of his message, but he was careful enough to craft it so it included all people - including white people. He knew that if he insisted his message was for strictly black folks he wouldn't have gotten anywhere in the racial climate of his day. I also believe he really thought that all people should be equal and he just wanted to make sure blacks were a part of that. That is why they call it the civil rights movement. It is for everyone. The idea that just because he made his speech years ago on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial nobody else can make a speech there on anniversary is absurd. He doesn't own that public property - we all do. Beck has said over and over he is not trying to stomp on King and has also expressed great respect for him. Those people who are trying to make this something it isn't are just trouble makers. We need to allow our citizens to express their message without fear and wherever it is allowed. If you don't like Beck just ignore him. If you think you have a better message, then setup your own rally. King had a good message, but he has no more right to express it than Beck and does not own the spot where it is given if on public property.
