The 2010 Pakistan floods began July 2010 but the aftermath of the catastrophe has only started to surface. The flooding in Pakistan has been labeled with every kind of adjective - unprecedented, devastating, epic, cruel. Some 20 million people, almost two-thirds the population of Canada, are directly affected. Half a million people are living in about 5,000 schools where poor hygiene and sanitation, along with cramped quarters and the stifling heat, provide fertile ground for potentially fatal diseases.
“The number of people suffering from the massive floods in Pakistan could exceed the combined total in three recent mega disasters - the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake” - United Nations.
Plainly, this is a natural disaster of immense proportions; the Pakistani people are slowly emerging from their shock and the vastness of the task ahead is revealing itself. Without the continued and focused help of the international community, Pakistan and its people will not recover.
