Determining a location of a religious building has nothing to do with Freedom of Religion. No one is saying that Muslims cannot practice their religion in NYC. Simply, out of respect for past events, you must build elsewhere.
For the people who want to build this mosque to have an issue with this screams that there are ulterior motives in their pick of location.
The closest Buddhist/Shinto shrine to Pearly Harbor is 5 miles away. Does this prevent them from the freedom of religion? Absolutely not.
70% of Americans believe that this is a bad idea. Our core values have given us this opinion. These values come to us from our parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. Some of these people have experienced or witnessed far worse things than we can currently imagine. These core values are not and should never be influenced by politics or media. American “tolerance” should be treated with respect and appreciation. It should not be taken for granted nor should it be expected. Democracy is our cornerstone and in a democracy majority rules. The majority did not say “do not build the mosque”. Majority said “build it somewhere else”.
