St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church was destroyed 9/11/01 when the South Tower of the World Trade Center crashed down on it. Efforts to rebuild are stalled in negotiations between the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and the Port Authorities of NY and NJ.
The Christian church was founded in 1916 by immigrants. Services were held there from its founding until 9/11.
I am dismayed that a mosque is on the fast track and in the limelight for consideration of being built at Ground Zero.
Personal Opinion: I am a tolerant Orthodox Christian and pray for those responsible for inflicting such pain on our Country. At the same time, I cannot conceive of fruition of the plans to build a mosque at Ground Zero as other than insensitive to the collective tribulations and deaths already suffered because of events there. God Bless America. ~ V. Keegan
