I don't really know how to answer this question...
I can only tell you what we are doing here Santiago, Chile. Our relationship to students is very personal; we kiss each other, we have breakfast classes, sometimes classes start at 8 am, so we bring in coffee, muffins, sandwiches or whatever.
Attendance is compulsory and so is homework. Assignments are often given back to the students if not done right. They have to re-do them until they are right.
Students are photographed and video-taped regularly to monitor their progress.
Sometimes we go out for coffee. It is not unusual for students to visit their professor's home and have dinner. Occasionally we meet at their home and have dinner with their parents.
I remember one time a student had been late to school on various occasions and I called her mother. She came in to see me and didn't realize that her daughter had been late to classes. She never was late again.
We use new media a lot, such as Facebook, Blogs, Youtube, Twitter, iPhones, Google Docs, including iReport. We regularly email each other via Facebook.
Writing assignments are usually published at different public websites instead of being thrown in the garbage. On occasion homework is done directly on Facebook.
Yes, we do have text books, but students select materials themselves as well.
We watch TED, BBC, CNN, Deutsche Welle, France24 and many other not so well-known sites such as VBS.TV.
A lot of current issues from all around the world are being followed and discussed via internet.
We have Scribd accounts to download readings, articles and books.
Our classes tend to be small, usually around 18 students, and they could be as small as 6 students.
Learning for us here is not just in class room. It could be anywhere.
For example one of my students lives 800 km from Santiago, and couldn't come to the University until next. But she still had to her homework and everything was done via Facebook.
In the video you can see a 3rd year student talking about Hip Hop History and explaining some basic techniques. As a matter of fact we contacted a Hip Hop Artist to ask him some questions. He passed on a website to our students...
I can honestly say our students are eager to study, are new media savvy and rarely drop out.
