Fortunato in Egypt

Spent the last week in Cairo...with a side trip to Alexandria.

This was my third visit to Egypt but the first time I got around to seeing the Giza pyramids.  Also made it out to see the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid.

The Cairenes are some of the most friendly people you will ever meet in your travels, but their driving will make you age a year or two for every taxi ride you take.

I only caught a couple of accidents...which seems miraculous with all the near collisions that occur a million times a day.

Cairo is made up of sections according to the way the city spread out and the religious divides.  I hoofed it through Old Cairo, Islamic Cairo, and the Coptic Christian area with no problems other than things went south for a quick moment as we headed towards Khan El Khalili.

It seems a couple of guys decided to duke it out but one of them broke a bottle in half and tried to cut up the other dude.  It exploded in a fraction of a second and of course my fiancee is right in the middle of it.  I grabbed her daughter and shoved her out of the way while another Cairene wrapped his arms around the guy with the bottle and spun him away from my fiancee while bumping her with his back to get her out of harms way.

We stepped quickly out of the immediate area and regrouped.  After a couple of 'Wows', we continued on to the Khan El Khalili Bazaar none the worse for wear.

Alexandria is on the north coast and was well worth the long drive on the Desert Highway.  It was great seeing the Mediterranean Sea again...
