Every GOP Senator swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. Everyone of them broke that oath with their "No" vote on don't ask and don't tell policy.
Some defenders of the military's discriminatory policy will say the the military is different. Rules established by the military don't have to follow the Constitution.
This is a discriminatory policy that doesn't work for America anymore. DADT was a step in the direction Americans needed to take when it was implemented. Now, it is obsolete. Serving openly in our military should be allowed.
Recent polls show that the majority of Americans, both Republicans and Democrats are in favor of repealing DADT- 64% Republican and 80% Democrat favor DADT's repeal.
American voters are for the most part, in agreement that this policy is wrong. So why are the GOP Senators again in lockstep in opposing what would be the will of the people?
The GOP doesn't want to risk losing the social conservative and religious right's vote in November.
To hell with Gay Rights. To hell with the Constitution! The GOP needs their base's vote to take back control of Congress so they can again represent the will of the American people?
The GOP have pledged to "do things differently" this time, in their newest "Pledge to Americans, if given another chance this November.
Yes, as their "NO" vote on Gay Rights shows. The GOP doing what right for American people and the gay community is about as likely as the sun rising in the West tomorrow.
Sen. Dan Inouye (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, took the Senate floor after the vote to describe how he had to fight his way into the military during World War II because of discrimination against Japanese Americans, discrimination that continues against gays and lesbians today, as well as against undocumented immigrants.
"Just a little step back in history, if I may say so? On December 7, 1941, something terrible happened in Hawaii," Inouye, who lost an arm in the war, recalled.
