The visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to New York City to participate in the United Nations General Assembly this week is creating the usual controversy and drawing protesters to the streets, On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, on Second Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan a small group demonstrated not only against Ahmadinejad's presence in the city, but also raised their voices against Hilton Hotels- the Iranian leader is staying at the Hilton on 42nd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, the scene of one of the biggest shows of security in an area that's virtually frozen. The midtown block where the hotel is located, is blocked by sanitation trucks, cement barricades and dozens of police officers, secret service agents and special forces. With signs reading :Blood in his hands, Blood in your pillows", the protesters condemned Hilton for "housing our enemy". Several blocks north, on 47thStreet and Second Avenue, on Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, next to the Katharine Hepburn gardens, another group, mostly Iranian Americans holds a daily silent vigil and distributes information to passers-by about the political situation in Iran and their opposition to its President's presence. The signs displayed in the plaza reflect their views louder than words. A masive rally is planned for later this week, when both Ahmadinejad and President Obama will address the world organization.
