In 1979, the people of Nicaragua, under the leadership of the FSLN (Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional) defeated with arms the genocidal dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle. During the 80s, the U.S. declared war on Nicaragua supporting with weapons, money and all kinds of resources to the "contras" and finally in 1990 the FSLN lost the power in presidential elections.
In 2006, after 16 years of fighting from the opposition, the Sandinistas returned to power under the leadership of Commander Daniel Ortega, this time not by weapons but by way of free elections, in which the people of Nicaragua gave their support.
The President Daniel Ortega leads the country with a government focused on restoration of rights and participation of the majority in government. His motto of government is "El Pueblo Presidente" (The People is the President).
