I am still deeply moved by this film, I will confess right here that we cried for 10 minutes at the end. The heist film has always been one of my favorite genres, but this picture was simply one of the best movies of the last 10 years. After starring in several bombs in his career, Ben Afflack hits a grand slam here in a picture that has a spectacular ending in Boston's Fenway Park.
Ben's character Doug is different from the other robbers, who all hail from "The most famous robbery neighborhood" in America, Boston's Charlestown section. Unlike his friends, he had the potential for a great "real job", Doug was on the track to become a pro hockey player. But his dad was a lifetime criminal, so he takes the path of his buddies - they are the best "professional" bank robbers on the east coast.
But in the great opening sequence, Doug makes a key mistake: He falls for the beautiful bank manager Claire, after it is discovered she lives right down the street from him in the same neighborhood.
The robberies are just the background of this deep - and moving - film. Do you go with the family legacy - or your friends? After Doug falls in love, he wants to leave this town, taking Claire with him. But, as is so often the case: Can he escape his profession? Is it really possible to do that "Last Job" - and get out?
I am still crying as I write this. Please do yourself a favor, don't miss this beautiful film. Grade: A+
