He was swept out of Santa Maria, California on a tide of optimism as fed-up voters rejected the sitting Acting Governor, and his large expenses claims.
Abel Maldonado clinched the seat for the GOP Party after he defeated Dems. He spent most of the election campaign defending his second-home allowances.
But less than three months after his victory, Abel Maldonado is facing extraordinary questions about his own conduct.
And if voters had hoped for a breath of fresh air, their new acting Governor has managed to attract attention for a whole host of wrong reasons - ranging from accusations of being a council tax cheat to claims that he had an affair with a married Councilwoman who became his live-in lover.
He is now facing calls to quit. The first light to be shone on the situation came when Mr. Maldonado was threatened with action over accusations that he had made false council tax claims.
Abel Maldonado denies any wrongdoing, and insists the woman was never actually living there - only his dog was.
And he explained that the Councilwoman was merely a friend in need, who was getting divorced and briefly needed 'a place to stay'.
At least, that is what Maldonado said, when first asked about the situation.
The Santa Maria Police Dept has issued a devastating statement to officials at local District Council, which is investigating the council tax 'irregularity'. They also now will be conducting reviews of taxes and expense reports from Abel Maldonado's office of Sacramento,California.
The local and state authorities want to determine the actual numbers that left all office locations associated with this sitting Governor Abel Maldonado; and all suspicious activities that came out of his office.
And constituents who filed complaints against him for ignoring phone calls, emails, and making remarks such as "I don't need to care about you people in California, you almost voted a dog into office with your votes casting in an actor named Arnold Schwarzenegger."
