Thousands of anti-government Red Shirt protesters have gathered at the same Bangkok intersection they shut down earlier this year in a rally to mark the fourth anniversary of Thailand's last coup.

Red Shirts started gathering at the Ratchaprasong intersection this morning.

Today is the fourth anniversary of the 2006 coup that deposed red shirt icon Thaksin Shinawatra from government.

It is also four months to the day since the military dispersed the long running protest of April and May.

There are now a few thousand of the anti-government protesters crowded on footpaths and Skytrain bridges around the site where they conducted a two-month sit-in earlier this year.

Bangkok is still under emergency rule, which means the gathering is illegal, but security forces and the government have agreed to a peaceful rally that does not block roads.

Already traffic is gridlocked in the area.
