Today, on North Island Coronado, I witnessed our military and law enforcement working together to take care of two suspicious suitcases discovered within base perimeters. The incident was at the visitor’s center and main exit point for base traffic. The area was immediately blocked and all people and traffic diverted from the area. All individuals within a two block radius were evacuated.
After hours of addressing the situation, two suspicious suitcases were detonated. In all my years on the island I have never seen anything like this take place and hope I never do again. Response appeared quick and methodical.
I am very thankful for all the men and women in this country that choose jobs of service. It is to them we owe this beautiful day we were able to enjoy. These men and women put their lives on the line regularly to prevent the public from unthinkable acts of violence and crime. I hate to think what could have happened if the situation had gone another way.
