35 miles north-east of Bogota you will find the Laguna de Guatavita, one of the sacred lakes of the Muiscas (an indigenous tribe). The rituals performed in the lagoon are the basis for the Dorado legend (The indian chief would cover his body in gold and submerge in the lagoon as a ritual to honor his wife who lived on the bottom of the laguna). The lagoon is located in an old crater and surrounded by green mountains. It is a place worth a visit!
