Laylatul Qadr - The Night of Power

It's now 3 a.m. on Monday morning. I've been up all night, as have many, many Muslims, because it is "Laylatul Qadr" or the Night of Power.

It was in this night - the 27th night of Ramadan - that the first Quranic revelations came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) via the Angel Gabriel.

This night is equal to 1,000 months, so Muslims take this time to pray, recite Qur'an and make supplications.

In the video, you will hear two recitations from the Qur'an. The first is called "Qadr" and it is the chapter that talks about the Night of Power.

"Indeed, it is We who have sent this Qur'an down from on high on the Night of Empowering Decree.

"And do you realize what is the Night of Empowering Decree?

"The Night of Empowering Decree is better than a thousand months!

"Therein do the angels and the Spirit Gabriel descend, by the permission of their Lord, with every divine commandment.

"Peace it is till the rise of dawn!"

The second recitiation is called "Iqraa" or Read! (or Recite!). It is the first revelation God gave to Muhammad (pbuh) through the Angel Gabriel.

The first few verses of Iqraa go like this:

"Read, O Prophet, in the name of your Lord who has created!

"He has created man from a clinging clot.

"Read!

"For your Lord is the Most Gracious One, who has taught by the pen, has taught man what he has known not!

"No, indeed!

"Most surely, man is unmindful of his covenant with God.

"And thus he does transgress, for he sees himself as self-sufficient.

"Indeed, to your Lord is the return of all."
