I have immediate family members who have lived a good portion of their lives on the wrong side of British Colonialism. Some of those individuals remain Pro Independence; others speak dreamily of a mythical day when the British will return and restore order and prosperity.
I am going to throw out a discussion that I have heard in my own ear. It is massively politically incorrect. I anticipate the response of the non-thinkers who will label and dismiss, perhaps with a little profanity. I am prepared to ignore them. I am looking for thinkers who will attack the argument with intelligent thought. Are you ready?
When Europeans first went to Africa the only civilization, above the tribal level, was in the Arab dominated north. Today, if a sub-Saharan African can read or write, operate machinery or comprehend government in a paradigm that rises above tribalism, he owes those skills to his former colonial masters.
Therefore, the ejection of the Colonial masters has placed Africa and Africans on an unchangeable course that will end in the illiterate, tribal state out of which they have so recently risen.
I do not buy into this theory. However, current events on the African continent make it difficult to refute. If you have a rational argument that goes beyond “I wish it not to be true”, I would love to hear from you. If you are want to label both the argument and the reporter with dismissive titles, please save your breath.
