My Hero, My Airman

The US military personnel certainly does not always get the recognition that they so rightly deserve. They are the ones that go to work everyday, sick or not, to help defend our freedom. The men and women of the Armed Forces keep us all safe on a day to day basis doing jobs that most of us know little or nothing about. We all hear about the military when we go to war, be it a war against terror or a fight for human life. What we do not hear about often are the ones that are at home. My husband has only been to Iraq once in his six years in the US Air Force. He did not join the military for glory or to be a hero. In reality he joined to get money to help pay for college. This may have served as the catalyst for him joining, but his time in the US Air Force has become so much more than that. He does not deploy, instead he spends days and nights away from me, his wife and the rest of his family. Why does he do this? Because he has a job to do, a mission to fulfill, a duty to serve and protect this country and his fellow man. He keeps us safe by ensuring we have the capabilities to defend our borders if we ever must do so. All the while, he comes home tired, hungry to little or no recognition from anyone other than me. I tell him that I am so proud of him and he simply shrugs his shoulders. He does not always see the importance of what he is doing, but still I tell him I am proud of him because I am. He does his job, sometimes 16 hours at a time, and comes home and still loves me and adores me. He supports me as I go to school. He is my rock, he is my hero, he is my Airman! Thank you Senior Airman Thayer Olin for all that you do, and all that you don’t even know you do!
