Homeowners are opting to stay in their own yards rather than go away. Luxury pool and landscape designer Chris Cipriano has created some of the most elaborate outdoor spaces for suburbia’s rich and famous. Recently he has been called by more families with smaller backyards to build the perfect staycation destination. Cipriano shares some of his tips.

- Think outside of the box: lawns and gardens don’t need to have finite lines, add a kidney shaped flowerbed or an oval water feature. Sticking to boxes and tight lines in a small area makes the yard look even smaller.
- Don’t be afraid to build up! Incorporate raised flowerbeds and planters. These will add both height and texture to your space.
- Add a dip/splash/lap pool: Dip pools fit about 4-6 people and typically are 3 feet in depth. Perfect for taking a quick dip, or just relaxing for the day, dip pools can be fully customized to look natural in your yard.
Add a patio: Build out a patio that holds a small table with chairs and a grill. Line the patio with an herb garden that is slightly circular. This will add depth when looking out from the house plus the herb garden will bring pleasant smells.
Don’t overcrowd: Similar to small bedrooms or living rooms, don’t overwhelm your backyard with oversized lawn furniture or planters. While a full-sized picnic table might be too large, a bistro table could be perfect.
