According to the Daily Bite blog today, BP said it can't proceed with the removal of the Macondo BOP due to high seas.
This may be a good thing as the removal of the sealing cap, which finally stopped the spewing flow of polluting oil and gas from the well blow-out, and permitted the well to be sealed off with a 1000 foot long cement plug, in conjunction with the tugging and pulling on the BOP which is attached to "hanging drill pipe" that can compromise the integrity of that plug, can re-start the blow-out.
Since the well is presently "killed" it seems extremely reckless to proceed with any work that can put stress on the plug, including completing the relief well(s), until there is, on standby, some means similar to that illustrated on www.dwoc.info to capture the blow-out fluids, before they can contaminate the ocean.
A forensic examination of the failed BOP is important to ascertain the reason for the failure and to make improvements in the design. However, rushing the removal to the extent of another potential blow-out disaster does not make sense.
