Tropical Storm Earl Update – additional watches and warnings issued

Atlantic – Tropical Storm Earl: Earl continues to race westward over the tropical Atlantic and is heading for the northern Leeward Islands.  Interests in this region need to be finalizing preparations for Earl either as a direct hit or glancing blow to the north.

At 500 PM AST / EDT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Earl was located about 600 miles (965 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands. Earl is sprinting toward the west near 23 mph (37 km/hr). A gradual turn to the west-northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected on Sunday.  On the forecast track, the center of Earl will approach the northern Leeward Islands on Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph (95 km/hr) with higher gusts.  Earl is forecast to become a hurricane on Sunday.  Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles (140 km) to the north of the center.

Long Tern Forecast

 

Earl will continue to move westward into an environment favorable for strengthen and will become a hurricane Sunday.  Earl is still expected to slow and make a turn to the northwest over or just prior to the Leeward Islands – thus interests in the northern Leeward Islands need to make final preparations for at least flooding rains if not hurricane force winds.

Next week, Earl is expected to continue strengthening while tracking to the north-northwest and could threaten the East Coast of the US later in the week.
