What is Ramadan to a Filipino Muslim Lawyer

On many events in my life, I meet different types of people with different background and profession. Today, on a spiritual retreat I attended, I’ve met a Muslim Lawyer who had accepted my request to share with me his views on what Ramadan means.

He said:

“For a Muslim, Ramadan is a time for reflection.  The fasting gives a Muslim an occasion to renew his faith in God, reminding him of His commandments.  For those who have time to spend, Muslims stay in the mosque praying. Every Muslim has to emulate the ways and practices of Prophet Mohammad.  The month of Ramadan offers every Muslim the chance to do just that.  Submission to “Allah” (God) is the core belief of Islam.  Fasting serves as a renewal of that submission to God as demonstrated by Abraham who was willing to sacrifice his son to show his faith in God.  In brief, Ramadan is a time for meditation – connecting with God.  At the end of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world celebrate Hari Raya, a celebration of life.”

We may have different nationalities, different religions, different beliefs, different practices, and different celebrations, yet we are all human beings.
