Where has this girl been hiding?
Earlier this evening I was browsing MySpace Music. This is rare for me. I depend on Pandora for my indie music but it had been a while so I decided to take a look at the charts. I stumbled across a user profile and I was immediately drawn in. The profile image of a petite shapely little blonde. Her status read: "I love the person who is reading this" -posted 2 hours ago.
Updated user profiles are rare on MySpace these days. The majority of MySpace users are bands or musicians. I was curious to know more as I scrolled down to read about her interests.
Music: "Necessary for survival"
Movies: "Have soundtracks"
Television: "I prefer Radio"
Heroes: "Cameron Crowe, Scooter Braun, Chelsea Handler"
Who I'd like to meet: "Myself in 20 years"
It is obvious from her background info that this girl has broadcasting in her blood. A grandfather who worked as both a radio DJ and TV anchor, an aunt whom was the 1st female inducted into the Mississippi Broadcasters Association (1973) and a father who started out as a DJ and worked his way up into the industry. Her information states:
"For the past 2 years I've been on a quest... Searching for a way to put a spin on things. The theme song for my quest is Last DJ by Tom Petty. Listen to the lyrics and if you are clever, you can figure me out." Read more: http://www.myspace.com/storyofagirl
I listened and after watching videos featured on her profile, I figured her out. She was obviously one of the early ones to jump on the Antoine Dodson craze. You all know him. The Bed Intruder Song landed on Billboard Hot 100 last week. There are countless covers of the song out on Youtube. Recently, Hayley Williams -lead Singer of the band Paramore contributed vocals for a punk rock version of the song.
Missy Leigh has taken it to a whole new level. With video footage from her personal meeting with Antoine, she presents Dodson with his very own "Antoine Award".
"I made it myself Do you really like it?" she says to him. Next he is showered with Beatles t-shirts for the whole family. It kept me smiling the whole way through.
Her second video, "ANTOINTASTIC". A song and video project put together by herself and a friend as a tribute to pop culture. BRILLIANT! This girl recognizes the shift in the music industry and plays it up by featuring footage of pop music icons who follow "Antoine on the radio". A catchy, quirky, pop song that in my opinion, is much more deserving of a spot on Billboard. She's Radio's Sweetheart and I am honored to be the first to report on her. I would like to see more of this girl in the future.
In closing, I'd like to share a quote. Moby's opinion on where the music industry is headed. People like Missy Leigh prove this point:
"people are getting more self-reliant which I think is great because the record companies aren’t going to be around in five years, you know, or at least they are not going to be around in anything resembling the form that they have had in the last fifty years. So it is a frightening time for a lot of people, and I know this sounds cliché but its also a really exciting time, and I think music has benefited, the actual quality of music has been a lot better, because a lot of people are putting out records purely for the love of putting out records and not hoping to sell millions of copies. The demise of the record business is almost, if you have to point blame anywhere, sadly it is at the record companies themselves, you know, because in the ‘80s and ‘90s, they kept charging more and more for CDs even as the costs came down. So it’s almost like the record labels would arbitrarily just keep charging more and more, and they were signing bands who had a shelf life of about six months, so there is no loyalty. You know, people were buying CDs in the ‘90s because they liked the song they heard on the radio, but they could care less about the artist."
