This 8th Century Umayyad mosque is the centerpiece to one of the oldest existing cities in the world, Damascus. Not only is the Mosque known for its grandeur and beauty, but you feel a sense of religious tolerance there as both Muslims and Christians alike go to visit the tomb of John the Baptist (inside the mosque) on a daily basis. Even Pope John Paul II visited this mosque in 2001, which made him the first pope to ever pay a visit to a mosque.
