Super Model Marisa Miller: New first mate to the infamous Captain Morgan

What happens in Vegas does not always stay there as a healthy relationship is one that we should all hear about.   So on Saturday night at Haze inside the Aria Hotel, Victoria Secret Angel Marisa Miller, took to the red carpet with the equally spicy and sassy Captain Morgan.

The relationship kicks-off the inaugural Guys Choice Awards where the Captain and his new first mate cavorted along looking like a true dynamic duo.

What does the Captain think about his newest “crew member”?

"As you know, being the Captain is a legendary experience.  I have become a busy man with so many parties to attend. Sometimes there needs to be a second in command to keep the party going, and who better than a mate like Marisa Miller," said Captain Morgan.   No party is complete without a smart, funny, down-to-earth woman who knows how to have a great time.  I've now teamed-up with the most beautiful woman in the world to help me spread the word to all my friends."

And beautiful she was, Miller dazzled the crowd and agreed "Captain Morgan is all about celebrating legendary times and I'm excited to be on board as the Captain's First Mate."

Ahoy, Cheers and Tally Ho!

Me and The Media Related Guy

Me and the media related guy

After pleading to my mother about a 100 times she had finally agreed to go shopping for the monthy grocery.

While moving from one row to another at the store, all of a sudden my brother said excitedly,

‘hey Mina! Do you remember who this guy is?’

I looked in the direction to where he was pointing. There stood a guy with short spiky hair. He was wearing a jacket with metal studs and an earring in one year. I didn’t recognize him.

‘Who’s he?’ I asked my brother.

He didn’t tell me. At first I thought he was kidding me but I kept on asking and the only hint he gave me was that the guy was associated to the media and I had also seen him on television. He told me that the guy worked behind the scenes. While shopping, I spent all my time wondering who he was. When we were done and went to the billing counter, he was standing on the counter parallel to ours. I decided to go and ask him who he was.

‘Sorry to bother you sir but can you please tell me who you are. My brother says that you are related to the media but he won’t tell me who you are,’ I said.

‘I am Waqar’ he replied.

‘ What’s your occupation?’ I asked.

‘I play drums for a band called E.P’ he said.

Oh my! I had been talking with the drummer of one of my favorite bands and I hadn’t recognized him!

‘O my God! You are the drummer of my favorite band!’ I squealed foolishly.

‘Please wait here. I’ll go and get a paper and a pen to get your autograph’ I said hurriedly and then rushed to my counter.

My mother is a doctor and the only paper she found was her patient’s ecg so I took it to Waqar and he signed the back of it for me.

It’s been 3 year now and I still have it with me. That day will always remain a part of my cherished memories. Here’s a picture of me with his autograph.

My daughter and I traveled throughout the Middle East in July/August 2009.  Dubai was HOT but fascinating.

A gentleman on the plane explained the reason the sky is so hazy.  They call it "toze" (I may be spelling it completely wrong), it's when the winds kick up a sand storm and then there is so much grit in the air that it feels overcast - sure doesn't give a break in the heat however.

So much for an open and transparent adminstration fighting against the evil party of No and that corrupt US Chambers of Commerce!

From the Wall Street Journal

If at first you don't succeed, get some friends in high places to shut your opponents up. That's the latest Washington power play, as Democrats and liberals attack the Chamber of Commerce and independent spending groups in an attempt to stop businesses from participating in politics.

Since the Supreme Court's January decision in Citizens United v. FEC, Democrats in Congress have been trying to pass legislation to repeal the First Amendment for business, though not for unions. Having failed on that score, they're now turning to legal and political threats. Funny how all of this outrage never surfaced when the likes of Peter Lewis of Progressive insurance and George Soros helped to make Democrats financially dominant in 2006 and 2008”

Report —

Interview with 10 year old Roller Derby brat named SLICE CREAM.

Young girls from all across the country are turning to the sport of Roller Derby.

Junior Roller Derby is a modified form of the classic. Junior Roller Derby teams are often called Derby Brats. The first “Brat” league was created in Tucson, Arizona by young fans.
Atlanta Derby Brats is a Flat Track Derby organization for young women. Welcoming women from 7 to 17, one of which is 10 year old SLICE CREAM (that of course, is her Derby Brat name). SLICE is one of almost 30 young girls who have piled into a church gymnasium in Decatur, Georgia. Young girls dressed for attitude and toughness bring a whole new generation to the punk rock ethos. SLICE was kind enough to sit down for a post training session interview. All smiles, she proudly displayed the track burns on her ankles as though they were medals on a soldier. Many of these girls have been driven to Derby by the young girl movie sensation “whip it”. The Atlanta Roller Girls Are having wild success. Young fans of Derby have prime examples of female empowerment in everything that is “the new Roller derby” in their Atlanta Roller Girls. The Derby Camp put on by the ARG and teachers like Tanya Hide are giving these girls a chance at strong self esteem as well as the opportunity to live the Derby dream.  On Tuesday nights in Decatur, you can find SLICE CREAM and an entire pack of multi colored girls doing just that.

Bubble, you say?

These, one can not read an economy magazine or website without stumbling on hte dreaded ''bubble'' word. Let's get it out of the way right now.

First off, a bubble is something really extraordinary. Second, it is not supported by any fondamentals. Remember the ''irrationnal exuberance'' of the Nasdaq days, early 2000. That is, yet, the best example.

Looking now at the 2009/2010 commodities, and moreso Gold value that shot up to uncharted heights, that may appear as bubble indeed.

But there is something supporting the advance, which negates the bubble label, and, simply by looking at a comparisons chart, one can not see any bubble anymore. That is at least for now...

Sorry to burst your bubble...

A New Trail of Tears?

$

President Barack Obama’s political appointment for Assistant  Secretary of Interior-Indian Affairs, Mr. Larry Echohawk appears to have  embarked on a mission to bring national attention to the “state” of  Indian education by journeying his own Trail of Tears.

In the last year, Assistant Secretary Echohawk has cried at Brigham

Young University, wept openly at The Pawnee Nation, shed tears at  Haskell Indian Nations University and last week in San Diego at the  National Indian Education Association he is reported to have dropped a  crocodile tear or two.

It appears that Echohawk has now traveled the entire nation, north  south east and west weeping. Is this apology Indian Country has been  waiting for from the federal government?

Echohawk does not appear to be able to contain the mortification he  has found in Bureau of Indian Education schools when he talks to Indian  students and parents. Assistant Secretary Echohawk has now lasted longer  than the last half dozen or so political appointments at that level,  but surely the stress of such emotional commitment to Indian children  must be getting to him.

It’s a good thing Stephanie Birdwell-Bighorn and Venida Chenault are social workers and can step up to counsel him.

Of course, we think it would be a better thing if  President Obama  could appoint someone who actually did something positive for Indians  kids instead of hiring and promoting totally unqualified people and then  bawling because they screw up. But that’s because we believed President  Obama had an Indian agenda—one that looked at education.

Likely you did too.

Apple Days in Julian

$

It’s Apple Days in Julian, California and throngs of folks head to this little mountain villa to wait in line for a myriad of treats made from their freshly harvested apples. Locals celebrate the occasion with a weekend festival, followed by a month long feasting of everything apples – apple pie, apple dumplings, apple turnovers, apple cider, apple butter, apple salads, apples, apples, apples. For those patiently waiting in lines for the trademark apple pie, or simply strolling the streets at leisure, there are soulful musicians and impromptu character plays at every corner, it seems. As well, local artisans and crafts people are tucked into nooks and even building basements for the adventurous seeker of trinkets and handmade art to find.

I’m not sure if it’s the rarified mountain air, the quaint village atmosphere away from the urban sprawl, or the family-style layout of the pie places, but it is one of those rare locales where you can pull up a chair at one of the long tables with your slice of pie, hopefully a la mode, and strike up a cheery conversation with total strangers. You’ll share what you’ve seen, places to eat, which pie is better – flaky crust, crumbly crust, or the dumplings – just like you were old friends. And best to take a friend with you, because that decision about which crust to get is about the most difficult one you’ll have to make during your entire visit. Get both and share, you won’t be disappointed! Julian lends credo to that maxim, “life is short, eat dessert first.” Yum!

The John Lennon Exhibition

The little tiny island of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea,  held it's own tribute towards John Lennon's birthday, last Saturday, the 9th of October with an impressive and remarkable exhibition that ran over the two weekend days.

It had a lot of John Lennon's and the Beatles memorabilia that drew a good number of visitors which apart from the Maltese, there were other visitors who came from Liverpool (England), Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and even from Japan. So from a perceived National exhibition it soon graduated into an International exhibition to the amazement of the organizers!!!!

Some of the memorabilia included rare Beatles posters, scaled down figures of the Beatles and the Yellow Submarine, Lennon's 45 records and albums, special John Lennon stamps, tee shirts, Beatles boots, important reference books and magazines (I even saw a Playboy issue of January 1981 which included Lennon's last interview before his untimely death in December of 1980), phone-cards and a selection of John Lennon's finest compositions with the Beatles and from his solo career.

On Saturday the visitors were treated to the singing of Mark Mallia (a local musician) who sang some of John's songs.

This exhibition was made possible by combining the private collections of Mr.John Zammit (Lennon) and Mr.Philip 'Rokarja' Pace, who met just some days before and together agreed to hold this exhibition.

John Zammit was in constant contact with Yoko Ono's website while Philip 'Rokarja' Pace was the guide in this special exhibition.

These two are thinking of holding another show on the 8th December to coincide with the assassination date of John Lennon.

8-year old philanthropist helping to make for a better world

$

What is a philanthropist? The dictionary describes it as actions that benefit humanity: a desire to improve the material, social, and spiritual welfare of humanity, especially through charitable activities. Our 8-year old granddaughter Cinneidi is a young philanthropist. She embraces life with her heart and arms wide open (see video in #2).

Caring for animals in need is important to her. She volunteers at a “no kill” animal shelter named New Life Pet Adoption Center in Marathon, WI. During the summer she opened a kool-aid stand to raise money to assist in their needs. The summer before, she helped her grandpa build doghouses, which were later donated to a fundraiser event the shelter held. She likes to visit the shelter to help clean and exercise the animals. She has as much fun, as the animals do, with time spent playing together.

Her compassion is not solely towards animals, but likes to help people too. Cinneidi takes a lot of the photography and video used in iReports that intend to highlight positive and inspiring people in our area. This weekend she is looking forward to an annual event, Wausau Area Empty Bowls, where proceeds help a local food pantry prepare for their winter needs. She has helped make homemade signs, with inspiring words, and given them away to homeless shelters at Christmas time.

She never does any of it for attention or recognition. In fact, she is often uncomfortable when it is. Her goals are simple and her kind actions are from her heart. She was surprised when a short story about her helping build and donating the doghouses were blogged on at Humanitarian News and My Seattle Pets.

Every kind action is like skipping a stone across the waters of humanity. When asked why she likes to help at New Life she commented back “Because it’s the right thing to do and feels good.” Kids learn from the things adults take the time to show them. It is clear that her parents and teachers have taken a lot of time to do so in her life. We get out of life what we put into it and the little things sometimes have the biggest impact.

As the video shows, she has fun giving to others unselfishly. Her laughing and loving made for a complete day.

Mining History

The historic mining town of Julian, California is located east of San Diego, and was founded following the Civil War. It was the site of San Diego County’s first and only gold rush, which lasted only a decade, but many of the miners stayed and began farming. It proved to be an ideal location for growing apples, for which it is now famous, and lures thousands of visitors every fall following the harvest when fruit stands are overflowing with the fruit, and locals produce a variety of delicacies, from pies to ciders, jams, and jellies.

The two-cell jail, built in 1914, served as classy overnight accommodations for town drunks. For a time it also contained the only indoor toilet in Julian.

The Julian Pioneer Cemetery contains graves and headstones of many Julian pioneer family members and founders.
